Why the large premium for Silver Eagles & Maples?

Why is the premium for Silver Eagles & Maples so much over the spot silver price? (Usually $2 FRN and always 10%+ above spot) And the others like pandas, Libertads & Aussies are even greater spreads.

The Eagles & Maples sure are pretty coins but are they worth the difference over 90% junk silver??

Thanks, Bill

Re: Why the large premium for Silver Eagles & Maples?

They carry a higher premium because they are coins minted by a large government and therefore carry an implicit guarantee of authenticity. In theory they are easier to sell because of this guarantee.

There sometimes are debates about what kind of gold to buy, and the debates revolve around similar considerations. Ultimately, you are buying something that you hope to not have any trouble selling. Some are willing to pay a high premium for that.

Spot is the cost of the raw material, silver bullion. There are significant additional costs to turn that bullion into a purdy coin. That cost, and other factors, are the "premium."
